all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is
7 K3 i0 s/ R: \7 {1 J4 c8 }alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight
9 o& `2 U2 }1 `# Q: y9 P/ e8 m5 Dis your answer.) M/ N2 i  P+ o6 q; K* l" E# ^4 ~* C) E1 l

It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in
1 e( n+ Q1 ?8 z0 L- Lnumbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and
  h# Q9 R* G; q4 v$ m% c' {# xfour hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed 2 G9 @; ?- w, F6 S
that this time must be different, that their voices could be that ' T3 C0 v0 N$ J- t  `" Q/ e
difference.
8 T* h- |( g; z% b$ D& x0 C- m  z* K" t+ C3 c* s' n! B) }
It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and
; l5 \9 X0 t. x* XRepublican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, 3 i" d% t% e# }& ?4 J: e5 |
disabled and not disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that
1 Y# D4 d  M: h3 _; t2 Iwe have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red ! ?* |) s, p$ n' g% i+ _/ t' m* p
states and blue states.( U) @* B4 d" b. \: I
+ ?6 T. F  w' I5 U0 H0 z
We are, and always will be, the United States of America.
/ ?* ^- X! m( M8 C/ b5 Q5 S& Q
. C' m0 O9 H; n' R& \1 YIt's the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to
! g% X4 G$ R1 M0 k" p8 C! @be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their 3 B; U1 k- B3 n' [0 I2 p  }
hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a " ~: M4 e3 A/ |' |2 V* E

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this

" X- y" E9 g- p( h% I. D% z0 hA little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious
* t( p* L8 C0 ^' l$ o3 zcall from Sen. McCain.% H$ @" p4 `1 ?3 x4 j3 o

) ~) ?. l/ a' C  _2 Y( M  H' mSen. McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he's fought even 9 n: @6 k# X4 O
longer and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices 1 C, u4 w# E6 ~
for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for
* ?! L6 {# @; V  u9 S! \3 Ithe service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.

I congratulate him; I congratulate Gov. Palin for all that they've & a  l6 i  @( Z& ?2 l3 p
achieved. And I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's

heart, and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of

0 S( C# N8 P, ]2 q0 B0 f& T5 m5 UIt grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their
9 R7 K! E2 p. Q2 l+ Z0 w& w3 egeneration's apathy who left their homes and their families for jobs that
8 C" `) Y7 i, F1 M( u2 N# `; ]offered little pay and less sleep.# z2 q6 p! R" Z0 o4 n

% q2 n6 U1 c  q$ AIt drew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold
5 \. l) R$ D- p" Vand scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the $ G& h2 G$ V- p1 x
millions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more $ Y) C4 Z6 S: A% X6 x+ m6 }
than two centuries later a government of the people, by the people, and for
0 C5 q) j+ ]+ x) N2 q3 t/ U2 s7 rthe people has not perished from the Earth.9 g' W) `/ z9 E7 S7 |3 V  n1 e

You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead.

bring are the greatest of our lifetime -- two wars, a planet in peril, the ; p& b+ m- E7 b; }/ X* V
worst financial crisis in a century.

9 ]9 ?+ `8 l; g2 Z# \. d, AEven as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up
9 Y7 M( _) k$ n( L3 `% nin the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives

asleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage or pay their doctors' bills

The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there 0 T" L: x2 c( u5 ^. b8 R: P2 ]* J
in one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more 2 b, A8 X# u  x" @4 H# D$ M
hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.

I promise you, we as a people will get there.

with every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the

But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will ! _. f0 }6 [1 F8 b/ c' z
listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you
" m6 N9 E2 t4 t$ L# }5 r2 Cto join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it's been done in ) }4 S% S) W# c: r( @
America for 221 years -- block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by

to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things / t) k  o: G7 K; Q5 Q( X' C
were.

  ]' D- V% y0 O9 o* I7 V% D) WIt can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit $ v6 [8 `2 z+ }1 D8 C$ s
of sacrifice.# z+ s* M. @; S% g9 p

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each
. i4 N# N4 D( Qof us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ' ~; @0 [4 V2 z7 X3 R8 q. {; \* F
ourselves but each other.# d# w* v- c3 }

2 B3 z( Z3 F0 g  m8 w- b4 k" cLet us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's % ~' E- ~# |& _, D$ l
that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.
3 ]2 h; e! @! i* S! U" @& S
# `4 z' k0 r8 k, I: U, BIn this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let's resist
* B/ c0 r; k) O& Fthe temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and
) u0 G2 y, v3 ^; ^! [7 O! I% S1 simmaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.

. ~9 z0 M& \  l0 ~! g! Z1 h! H, c  @( [6 SLet's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the
( x& k' {5 v$ |1 E9 T8 y/ ybanner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the
: K  f  H, s5 t5 b. Z  ]values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.
6 i6 |, {; ]2 G/ N+ s# j" o( G! f9 |+ p, F' ~5 r1 ~
Those are values that we all share. And while the Democratic Party has won 7 @! ^6 r4 s  h+ k3 s; m
a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and
& k5 x! y7 a/ U7 |  m% ~determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress.3 a0 |0 w% Q- K% a: K

# C0 E6 c; A& |2 j' wAs Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we are not enemies
! F$ _1 [0 G# d  hbut friends. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds # z1 T& a- b0 S9 P& i, z

And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won 1 R7 t+ P/ x1 ~  ~- z* a, ?

ballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in ! L/ U$ p" v& |
line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann 6 t# B. h2 i. ~, F
Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.5 M3 y) U- x$ t) {) ]6 e

! A3 h6 X  d! k  {8 h) H; C8 ^She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars
, s0 s& R* x% s* m! K, Zon the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for
+ `% z- z; s) m  Ztwo reasons -- because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.
/ ^* A% ]: Y( E( |, d) B5 m) Y: @: ?* _) ~. G' {+ P
And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in " Y  h" Y! R6 Q- u
America -- the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the ( o5 Y, w1 K0 ~4 b6 C" a
times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that 8 O- j' h/ O. o& R, v
American creed: Yes we can.% L! @! K3 [4 q* |& n, I
  P+ M/ K+ L$ H- ]2 J
At a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she
9 `$ X& n! V9 T6 klived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we & [& R1 ?9 y) z3 `
can.

' z9 r' ~$ q/ W0 xWhen there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she $ j) O1 H, J" |8 w9 M
saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of * f, f' B; ^/ o/ B# ^
common purpose. Yes we can.1 j1 F3 n2 {  Q% a5 U. }/ A6 B

  @2 S+ c& x' w" tWhen the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was + {+ A% u9 T, d7 O1 k/ ~+ k; D
there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. 9 X& t; o' P2 d& a; a5 Y$ t
Yes we can.
( W3 g) }$ L2 P( Q$ m( O+ @6 f: i) ]
) J. w" _( V/ u. ^- G5 O8 bShe was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a
  D6 \+ Q8 Z& _6 e/ e0 w6 C' l# sbridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We $ s  _4 s2 y  d$ S* Z
Shall Overcome." Yes we can.
% m1 r* o5 L: F
* u; z! r7 z1 Z$ a; g! Z' @" QA man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was
3 K* c0 P* d6 g" y/ c% [5 a- ~" wconnected by our own science and imagination.; e& y* s# A+ p4 c# Y! k7 v

1 |1 [* a) X% vAnd this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and
4 L+ w) f8 b" X" k% Ocast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of
% I/ |/ C+ a/ H  G2 S7 Z: stimes and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change.
, _: E9 r/ ?8 \; O) |9 `; \3 Q* [# C0 e, X- ?& a5 |1 a& O' r+ }
Yes we can./ i% [+ d7 U0 G. F4 r" R

America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much
; u+ K! @& d0 \8 |more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves -- if our children should live   i6 ^' {" I5 s" E- h
to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long * X% B" F, Q) s- f/ X7 B" e5 E1 u
as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have 5 t: s3 B: P4 b6 P- V
