If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where

7 p! Z7 \: B, B  m/ QIt's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in 3 v  q  U4 t# I! ]$ ~
numbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and
" Z+ l& S/ G& v( k8 F: Ifour hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed $ X6 L7 F/ q! q- s
that this time must be different, that their voices could be that
" d& k/ c" K/ _" F" l, I/ \$ Y! rdifference.9 {8 G2 _* |0 o  Z" A/ @& o" ?
# q2 ~7 W1 w" g, Q/ m
It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and ) [) S# p) ^7 |% L' R- s
Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, 3 a4 w+ X2 D. ?, f
disabled and not disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that 0 v1 S. p& V" K& S5 o# D
we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red
  L: ~7 F6 O) o: I: h4 mstates and blue states.9 p' t$ I  _" L7 ^- L
) r( n+ z& n& ^3 j
We are, and always will be, the United States of America.
+ c7 W# o! E5 M1 e* Z5 {/ `( e7 x! H; j% R5 w; @( ~# K8 p: f
It's the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to 0 f- A* t) X: o# X1 m  [  W
be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their ' F/ M& y3 }' c1 [4 m; {+ U0 B# B
hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a . {# T0 _8 k5 U$ k6 {

date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America.

% j. r8 L, @) \5 xA little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious
: k9 n' u- @9 scall from Sen. McCain.- O( h# A5 X: d" s7 Q0 e

Sen. McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he's fought even
5 J5 U2 O! U; G8 v3 ]4 @( Flonger and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices 8 x0 k) v- c# M0 r
for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for & Q+ r& R1 |* N: o2 h1 P( x; k
the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.7 n! K6 T! \) O5 r" Z1 O7 E8 |9 X

I congratulate him; I congratulate Gov. Palin for all that they've ! k+ P; V+ `* _+ M9 e( _$ a

with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight. I know that my

( R, f6 g3 G$ Jmuch money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls
3 k+ S4 d2 [% q: Q  H- J# {of Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms : C& R, y" {& W# a5 z% O" r9 J
of Concord and the front porches of Charleston. It was built by working men 9 m  {) Y1 v& J: p; h
and women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and + j$ u( w9 B- l4 K! W
$20 to the cause.
( U* R( W% f6 e/ ^$ q9 b
' S# q- v  R6 o" ~) N. jIt grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their
3 n+ |$ u6 a; @$ R& @generation's apathy who left their homes and their families for jobs that ( A' @$ r2 S% q" V. R# E
offered little pay and less sleep.
) O0 l, q. s& X2 z0 c1 o+ v$ e0 X3 d5 t
It drew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold ; u, b, O( `* n
and scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the + }6 B- r+ M  d
millions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more
" ?+ X7 s' M: h9 y  S, Kthan two centuries later a government of the people, by the people, and for
* J  G5 ?9 A9 w/ x' X0 pthe people has not perished from the Earth.

This is your victory.: e2 s: K, [8 K+ {* Q4 }5 X. K

And I know you didn't do this just to win an election. And I know you

For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will

: g* I8 Z3 d0 ~worst financial crisis in a century.$ @& \7 A! I1 g

Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up 8 |  Z3 F1 o8 q! D/ E! U) n& ^) U
in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives + q% r# I* ^- g, {% ]
for us.+ H: F- ]7 t5 l+ X% s  d( {

' T' |$ a; m4 b2 GThere are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after the children fall
8 x. X1 `+ ]" r. l0 pasleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage or pay their doctors' bills ' M7 ]" O# G3 q- S# u3 V
or save enough for their child's college education.
' X: S. Z( ]; |4 A5 d1 O- G  f6 g% x: @
There's new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to # ]% `4 ?4 [3 K: ]
build, and threats to meet, alliances to repair.
. e) A# _) q% s, f) L6 [6 X! R
The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there
5 v  L( B6 M/ ^1 i1 F+ S* iin one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more
3 _' `9 K4 P2 n, G8 j; j! |0 Chopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.

4 n, z0 P. }: \I promise you, we as a people will get there.
! g+ J  p6 ?% j; X2 E
4 t' k1 d# U5 Q& N0 {" i5 |' e" bThere will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree
; S: R+ ?) a% s6 ?, s+ D5 S) l* xwith every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the
, n, q( ^+ }- agovernment can't solve every problem.

' \5 C1 }0 O( QBut I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will . B; B) h4 g* \- E+ n4 ]
listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you
' L& ?1 T) o9 Z% {/ ?) d9 L, o& P* yto join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it's been done in . w' \/ e. u; J- U9 ^$ k
America for 221 years -- block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by

* }$ N4 L/ Z( mWhat began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn $ v0 O- R3 Y9 p3 f: h- b

This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us $ a2 L2 z% u+ v0 u' z( B! W" m( m
to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things - E  h3 U5 C5 W7 w
were./ |; ]$ @2 S" `4 k$ t% x9 H

: g" c3 C( B* ~- QIt can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit $ i" k4 r5 A- Y/ F  e7 F6 G5 V8 G
of sacrifice.6 C  ^8 E* f7 I& B% d" S
; a. J" z+ K# {. q5 y' L0 l4 L- n5 S
So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each + C: j4 X! J! ~: L; i/ I% e
of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only
* {% w2 @9 t) Mourselves but each other.& u8 z# `0 v( \0 i( B" @7 \

0 E# Z* ]& T& C5 x" j* \Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's % d: f' \3 L, A$ m
that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.
: b: z  @2 J! y4 A( F. R
+ T. f% y0 _( dIn this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let's resist
7 Y5 r' g% l4 n8 b  S9 uthe temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and
; Y& ^/ \+ r# |6 U' F, Cimmaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.
8 [9 l* r7 y, V4 O/ P( Q: H7 H
# ?  |( n% p( [- ULet's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the
! I; g, {5 R5 Y* T  ?banner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the
; o4 d! f3 G! a- ^! R- w5 J" @values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.
4 @% F9 F8 U9 ~( ^
! x" w- W$ F  k! O( x4 }1 IThose are values that we all share. And while the Democratic Party has won 5 v3 L& U- i, J4 v+ U! Z0 y
a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and * k  [# O& k7 H0 g+ y3 X
determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress.
5 B' f) I  D" z. ^$ A/ w% C7 |5 e: o
As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we are not enemies 9 ?5 X3 O% W! a2 l" P
but friends. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds
6 z) h" v; e9 \( H. D5 w0 Y6 oof affection.

9 e' V/ i; b. a/ h5 A7 x5 EAnd to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won ! N# c. _8 d5 Y- R: M- @8 n
your vote tonight, but I hear your voices. I need your help. And I will be

And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments ) w* m3 ]9 t/ k* W/ p" ]
and palaces, to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten 9 o9 F, X, }* {/ B& ?1 F
corners of the world, our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, 4 \6 d1 Y: \0 N+ Z; U" I% }
and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand.

To those -- to those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you. To

our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our

must achieve tomorrow.

4 O' `% n& j4 G+ j% DThis election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for
$ Z9 s6 |2 r  r7 |; Wgenerations. But one that's on my mind tonight's about a woman who cast her 3 ^; z7 b8 L! A
ballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in
/ U( c, p* I: E. ?: O/ E) @line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann 4 _' C3 ^' ^$ o* P0 e( N4 z2 A3 q
Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.
6 S8 r; X+ P% i" r" P
) M. B% Z* l9 l% x% LShe was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars : `- T# f( W. e: x8 N; a
on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for
0 u, J  h7 X% H; \: D* P) Wtwo reasons -- because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.
, P3 c8 x5 W/ W  {( u% `% z# W2 i! l/ R9 S: [' S
And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in 7 D3 n( c% a. Z
America -- the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the 8 k0 q/ `( z6 e) z8 u: Z# g3 S
times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that
% J0 \; b+ {, Y: {5 R$ PAmerican creed: Yes we can.9 \, N: B! b  u# [# g

, P# u$ u- E) I/ `3 K: qAt a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she 7 z( z8 W7 I, U# U  F& m) o$ W7 }
lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we 2 r: }; ~/ I$ v/ v; s) l
can.5 u: b3 J9 a+ }2 c$ Q6 v! e

5 B: N) n) c: oWhen there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she
; O2 J' F/ b: J/ n' V) Q" isaw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of
. w0 `# W+ E, W+ m: P* Wcommon purpose. Yes we can.) ~# o7 N6 x. r4 ?
5 e, q( b! l0 R5 ?# C! [
When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was
+ U: y1 q, a5 R8 Athere to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved.
0 D- ]7 r) ~- u1 f7 VYes we can.
8 L- h, a# r* k6 o7 Z2 Y1 K
- I% t/ m! ]. O2 ^9 f+ x& G) S$ BShe was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a
$ z* `+ p5 J  O; rbridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We 7 a* F7 Z' X& W$ Z
Shall Overcome." Yes we can.
) d$ X- f5 B2 l* ^3 m3 V  K% M2 w
* _* r. |; S4 J8 j9 T; L1 T6 T! `A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was   q& Y0 I$ U+ f" @- M% Y- v" v
connected by our own science and imagination.
" [& @) U) `7 w! G# I0 k
9 I  Z# r% \& v* c3 B, tAnd this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and & X( m: H2 T! x/ F3 ~2 K8 T# J
cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of
3 n( j* i1 m# _times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change.
4 e3 g# B9 `/ d8 y4 k* v" I5 A4 \# M0 Z! o2 j7 t0 J' o+ }
Yes we can.
1 R- A/ k( i0 j( i6 }! \# N. l5 v' F
America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much
) U, E! i9 O& m/ Y5 A( M! V. G. Fmore to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves -- if our children should live   w  S+ P8 o% S" W9 r" g, V" y
to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long 2 U( q7 u7 S. X+ y
as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have 5 F$ x! ~/ a3 ~( s
made?
+ \+ G& ^9 A$ _4 z0 b, Q* R6 H( L: X
This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment.$ \: H( L' A5 a

6 P3 \6 ?+ a, C6 V2 QThis is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of ! P' a" {2 F4 t, A5 P1 n$ A& [
opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of
4 l4 ^, _: {) e0 ]; bpeace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth,
! g4 `! b" n4 ^' Ithat, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope. And where we
0 }6 U; l% N$ ^- k6 m4 Zare met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we * i2 Z& W8 t. J6 O- i9 l- H
will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: % K: e% m$ F4 y& y9 m
